How to Stand Out on eBay - Without a Custom Shopfront


When you sell on third-party marketplaces like Amazon or eBay, you have to play by their rules. You’re also at the mercy of any changes they might make to their processes and procedures. One big change which eBay have recently announced concerns an overhaul of sellers’ shop fronts. In principle, the update is beneficial for both buyers and sellers. It will be better for search engine optimisation (SEO) and provide a better experience when browsing on mobile, and it should be more secure. But it does spell a problem for any business with a customised shopfront.
 

When will custom shopfronts end?

According to eBay, the new optimised shopfront design will be implemented from May 2018, will all non-custom shopfronts automatically updated to the new version. For custom shop fronts and any design with HTML in, eBay says sellers will be able to move to the new version at the same time, or “we will move you to the new experience at a later date.” It’s unclear what this means exactly, but it’s highly likely custom shopfronts will all but cease to exist, sooner or later. eBay later states that after May 2018, you won’t be able to set up a new custom shopfront or convert back to the old experience. It also strongly recommends that no sellers invest any time or money into a custom shop experience that will not be supported.
 
So how can you showcase your brand and your business?
 
Without a custom shopfront, it may be more difficult for businesses to showcase themselves on eBay. To help you make your business stand out, we’ve put a few tips together. Many of them you probably already do, but the key is going back to basics and making sure you take advantage of every possible opportunity.
 

 

1. Optimise your listings in every possible way

This is the most obvious way to stand out on eBay and the most important. 
 
Make sure your title is as strong as possible. Use keyword tools to find the best phrases and most searched for terms, and include product details if possible.

ALWAYS upload good, effective photos. Take care with lighting and the quality of product images to make sure they’re clear, attractive and really stand out.
 
Include as many details as possible, and write a strong, powerful description. Use keywords and long tail search terms in your description, and also include emotive, informative language that highlights both features and benefits.
 
Include a ‘Buy It Now’ button, to let users check out as quickly as possible once they decide they want your product.
 
Offer free delivery wherever possible. And make sure your delivery process is as efficient as it can be.
 
Try and limit stock numbers on your listings, to create a sense of urgency and fear of missing out amongst your customers. If buyers see “10 or more available” they are less likely to think they need to buy right now. 2. Focus on customer support and feedback

One of the key areas where your business will stand out in comparisons is via your seller rating. You’re likely already focused on this, but it’s now more important than ever. Make sure your customer support is exemplary throughout the whole process, responding as promptly and effectively as possible to any questions, queries or problems. Always be personal and friendly with your buyers, and encourage them to leave feedback whenever you can. 3. Consider, try and test promoted listings

If you want to get to the top of search results and get your products in front of as many people as possible, you’ll need to pay for that privilege. eBay’s advertising service could work well for, but you’ll need to try it out to make sure the costs you invest are worth the return. 4. Update and enhance your About me page

One final and often overlooked area to focus on is your ‘About Me’ page. Create one, if you don’t have one already, or update it. More importantly, the content here ranks in organic search, so it’s another way to get noticed. Although it’s going to be more difficult to stand out on eBay with the storefront changes, remember that everyone will be in the same position.
